Wisconsin Inmate Records
Wisconsin inmate records contain official information of present and former inmates held in state prisons, county jails, correctional inmate facilities, and other penal institutions. The records may provide general information such as the inmate’s registration number, full name, date of birth, and sex. Public inmate records may also include sentencing information, such as the type and class of offense, and the location of the facility holding the inmate. In compliance with state laws, Wisconsin inmate records fall under the umbrella of public records and therefore can be accessed by the public.
Wisconsin’s Prison Structure
The Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) is tasked with the oversight of 19 adult institutions in the state. It also manages 17 adult correctional centers, including 3 women’s correctional centers: Taycheedah Correctional Institution, Milwaukee Women's Correctional Center, and Robert E. Ellsworth Correctional Center. Each of these facilities has unique rules and guidelines that the public must follow when visiting or contacting inmates.
How Do I Send Money to an Inmate?
Effective 2018, all payments and deposits to inmates housed in facilities managed by the Wisconsin DOC are processed by the payment service company, Access Correction, and its affiliate CashPayToday. Family and friends can send money to inmates using any of three options:
- Internet/phone
- U.S postal service
- Walk-in
AccessCorrections accepts deposits made via phone at (866) 345-1884. Members of the public can also make direct payments (cash only) by visiting any CashPayToday office.
Payments made using the U.S postal service must include the inmate’s DOC number and a completed deposit form. Check and money orders must be made payable to "Access Secure Deposits" and sent to:
Secure Deposits – Wisconsin DOC,
P.O. Box 12486,
St Louis, MO 63132.
Can Anyone Visit an Inmate?
Visits are only allowed to individuals named on an inmate’s approved list. Each inmate is allowed a maximum of 12 approved adult visitors. Depending on the circumstances, the warden of the facility may permit exceptions. However, children of approved visitors or children of the inmate are not counted among the 12 and may also be allowed to visit, if accompanied by an adult.
How to Visit an Inmate in Wisconsin Prison
Members of the public are advised to contact the facility before their visit. Although the Wisconsin Department of Corrections oversees correctional institutions in the state, each correctional facility establishes its own visiting schedule, consistent with the available resources and other activities. Details of the facility’s location and visiting schedule can be found by visiting the correctional facility’s website.

How to Obtain Inmate Records from Wisconsin County Jails
Most of the counties in Wisconsin maintain an online inmate roster or web service managed by the county’s sheriff’s office. For instance, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office maintains an online inmate locator tool that residents can use to find general information on inmates, while the Dane County Sheriff’s Office publishes a regularly updated inmate list. Waukesha County publishes an online list of inmates incarcerated at its county jail facility, while Brown County provides a searchable online platform that members of the public can use to access general information on former and current inmates. Members of the public may also be able to obtain records by contacting the support division of the county jail.
How to Obtain Inmate Records from Wisconsin State Prisons
Members of the public can locate an inmate or obtain general inmate information using the inmate search tool provided by the Wisconsin Department of Correction. The department recommends that requesters fill out all fields, providing as much relevant information as possible to facilitate the search, including the inmate’s name, birth year, address, and DOC number if known. Searches can be filtered to reveal only registered search offenders. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the department at:
