In addition, the Criminal History Unit of the Wisconsin Department of Justice serves as the primary repository for criminal, arrest, and related disposition records for the state. The unit manages and provides public access to non-confidential criminal records of individuals resident within its jurisdiction. Interested persons may request background checks and criminal history information Brown County indigenes or residents from the unit, or self-serve using any of the public access indexes available.
How to get Criminal Records
The Wisconsin Department of Justice collates and disseminates criminal history information to members of the public. Interested parties may submit requests for background checks and retrieve results using the Wisconsin Online Record Check System. Searches may be conducted using the name, social security number and/or fingerprints of the subject. Submissions may cost a minimum of $1.25 and may also require a registered Wisconsin Unique Personal Identification Number (WiUPIN)
How to Find the Sex Offender Registry and Other Sex Offender Information
The Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains a sex offender registry that features the names, personal information, and current whereabouts of registered sex offenders resident within its jurisdiction. Information about sex offenders in Brown County is available for public viewing on the Official State of Wisconsin Offender Web Site. Interested parties may also search offenders by name or geographical location and stay updated about sex offenders by subscribing to receive community notifications.
How to Find Inmate and Jail Information
The Jail Division of the Brown County Sheriff's Department compiles, maintains and provides inmate and jail related information of the county's correctional facility. Interested members of the public may view information about current and former inmates using the Sheriff's Office Inmate Lookup Tool. Searches can be conducted using the inmates first name/last name or other identifiers such as the inmates booking number. Court Records
The Office of the Brown County Clerk of Circuit Court generates and manages the court records of the Brown County Circuit Court. All Wisconsin Circuit court records are pooled and maintained on the WCCA platform, which offers public access to circuit court records, including Brown County court records.
Interested persons may access court records using the case search form of the WCCA. This will require the names, county and case number of the record of interest. However, dismissed misdemeanor, traffic, small claims, domestic/child abuse, and criminal felony cases will only be displayed on the site after 2 years of the final order.

Where & How to get Property and Bankruptcy Records
The Brown County Register of Deeds Department maintains a repository of all real property records and personal property liens for properties located and recorded within Brown County. In-person requests to view and/or copy these records may be directed to the office, and copies may be retrieved in person, by mail. Requests for certified copies typically require a payment $11.00 plus a $0.10 printing fee. Mail requests for certified copies will incur an additional $30.00 case search fee plus $0.50 per copy requested. Vital Records
The Vital Records Office of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services is the central repository of birth, death, marriage and divorce records, and issues copies of their certificates to interested and eligible persons. Similarly, the Office of the Brown County Register of Deeds maintains county vital records and processes requests to view and/or copy them. Thus, interested parties may obtain these records from either state or county custodians.
Where to get Divorce Records
Records of Brown County divorces are filed and maintained by the County Office of the Register of Deeds. However, special service records including divorce records from January 1, 2016, are excluded from the records available from the office.
Certified records of divorces that occurred prior to January 1, 2016, can be obtained at County level by preparing a written request that indicates the names of the registrant as well as the place and date of the divorce. Where and How to get Marriage Records
Marriage records are co-managed by the Brown County Register of Deeds and the State Vital Records Office in the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. However, only records of marriages prior to June 2015 are available at the county level. All records including those of marriages from June 2015 till date are managed at the state vital records office and are available on request.
To request records of marriages prior to June 21, 2015, at the county level, requestors are required to send a written query indicating the names of spouses, and the place and date of marriage as well as any applicable fees to:

Where and How to get Birth & Death Records
The Brown County Register of Deeds maintains and issues records of births and deaths. However, only birth records prior to October 1, 1907, and death records prior to September 1, 2013, are available from the county office.
To obtain notarized copies of records that occurred prior to the above-mentioned dates, interested persons may prepare written requests which indicate the name date of birth/death of the subject and the requestor's relationship with the subject. Requests must be accompanied by a photo ID copies and any applicable fees and sent to:

In addition to government agencies, county public records may also be obtained from third-party websites. These non-government platforms come with intuitive tools that allow for expansive searches. Record seekers may either opt to use these tools to search for a specific record or multiple records. Users are able to search third-party websites remotely for multiple records at a time with just the name of the record subject and their last known location, including the city, county, or state. Third-party sites are not sponsored by government agencies. Because of this, record availability and results may vary.
Are Property Records Open to the Public in Brown County?
Brown County property records are open to the public for inspection and copying. The Wisconsin State Public Records Law ensures the right to access public documents. Requesters can obtain copies of recorded documents on real estate transactions from the Register of Deeds in person, online, or by postal mail.

People can use the Public Access Terminals available in the Register of Deeds Office to conduct property investigations during business hours. However, they may have to pay prescribed fees for printing copies of search documents. How to Look Up Brown County Property Records
Brown County maintains an online property search portal that allows users to search property information by Parcel Number or Property Address. Requesters may have to pay prescribed fees to obtain copies of the requested documents. The Result of a search on the portal includes the property owner's name, municipality, District Information, Land Class, Acreage, Assessed Values, Mailing Address, Reference Document, Tax Records, Legal Description, and Comments/History. Search by owner name is not allowed on the property search portal. However, people can search by name and other parcel properties when using the Register of Deeds system by submitting an Open Records Request form or visiting Brown County offices.
